Chapter 14

Lucien watched Chloe as she sat, attention fastened on the singer spotlighted on the stage far below, and wished he'd chosen to sit in the back row of the box rather than taking his customary place in front. He'd cursed his choice for the entire second act and now halfway through the third. According to the program, it was shorter than the first two. Thank the goddess.

He wasn't sure he'd have been able to restrain himself much longer if there had been another hour or so of opera to go before he could kiss her again.

She was distractingly beautiful. The lights reflecting off the stage sent washes of color across her face and the distracting expanse of flesh above the neckline of her gown.

He wanted to drag her onto his lap, to tug down the silk of her bodice and put his mouth on her. Taste her. Wanted to do more than that, to be honest. But most of what he wanted went far beyond the definition of rumpling. Definitely not anything he could do when anyone in the surrounding boxes could see, not to mention the audience in the seats on the lower floor in front of the stage.

He contented himself with reaching for her hand and then attempting to peel her glove down.

She'd liked it when he touched the delicate skin inside her wrist last night. Had whimpered when he kissed her there, her magic pulsing faintly around him.

She turned her head as he tugged on one satin finger of the glove.

"Behave," she whispered.

"I am behaving," he said.

She pulled her hand back. "This is the final act. Patience is a virtue, my lord Truth Seeker." She smiled at him but shifted subtly, doing something to make the bodice dip lower.

Minx. Maybe he'd take her home and tie her hands to the bed, then teach her just how patient he could be.

"Listen to the music," Chloe said, grin turning wicked as though she could read his thoughts. She couldn't, but she might very well be able to feel them through the bond. She didn't have it closed as tightly as she had earlier. Perhaps the music was sufficient distraction to make her relax.

He was glad of that. If she was going to grow accustomed to her new life, both as a diplomat and his wife, then she had to learn to deal with the potential dangers of court life. To know how to lock away the concerns and weights of her responsibilities in those moments when there was nothing to be done about them and let herself be happy.

She must have learned to do that in Anglion.

As he'd learned to do it as a Truth Seeker.

But he would remember that music was one way to ease her fears. He'd bring her to the opera every chance he had if it would bring her happiness.

Hell, he'd buy her a damn opera.

Though not even the opera had made her relaxed enough to agree to some public rumpling, it seemed.

He shifted in his seat, trying to find a comfortable position.
